How to use Data Export (No Image Files)

Data Export contains the same records as a full backup, without the photo files.

Create a Data Export

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Data Export (No Image Files).
  3. Read the warning, then continue.
  4. Your phone's share screen opens with a .json file.

What the export contains

The same complete data record as a full backup: workouts, sets, routines, meals, foods, check-ins, weights, measurements, cardio, recovery, gyms, and equipment.

It does not contain your photos. It carries references to them, not the image files.

The file is small enough to email. A full backup often is not.

It restores without opening a ZIP

Restore reads a .json file. A full backup is a .zip, so restoring from it requires opening the ZIP first and picking the .json inside.

A Data Export is that .json directly. There is no ZIP to open.

How to restore your data

It does not include photo files

Your photos are not in this file. Restoring from it returns the data records without re-attaching photos.

The two files serve different purposes:

FilePurpose
Back up my data (.zip)Complete backup, including the image files
Data Export (.json)Restorable data record without image files

Keep a full .zip backup if you need the photo files.

What happens to your photos in a backup and restore

Anyone who opens it can read it

MesoMetric warns before sharing:

Anyone who opens the file can read all of it. Save it somewhere private, not a shared or public location.

This file holds your whole training record.
