How to scan a food barcode

A packaged food can be added by scanning its barcode instead of entering the numbers.

Macros means protein, carbs, and fat.

How to scan

  1. Tap one of the scan buttons above.
  2. Allow the camera when your phone asks.
  3. Hold the barcode inside the box on the screen.
  4. Check the numbers, then tap Confirm.

The scanner reads the first barcode it sees, then stops.

Tap Light in a dark room. Tap Cancel to close the scanner.

Checking the numbers

The Confirm food screen shows the food name and four numbers:

  • Calories
  • Protein (g)
  • Carbs (g)
  • Fat (g)

For more or less than one serving, change Quantity. A line underneath shows what will be saved.

Tap Confirm.

If the numbers are wrong

The food information comes from Open Food Facts, a free food list that anyone can add to. Entries are sometimes wrong.

  1. Tap Edit / Correct.
  2. Fix the numbers.
  3. Tap Confirm.

The correction is saved on your phone and used every time you scan that item.

If the food is not found

MesoMetric shows no "not found" message. It opens the food form with the barcode filled in.

Enter the numbers and save. That barcode is recognised the next time you scan it.

Camera permission

Your phone asks for camera access the first time you scan. Camera access needed appears with a button to allow it.

If access was denied earlier, no button appears. Open your phone's Settings app and turn the camera back on for MesoMetric.

The food can also be added manually.

What gets sent

Looking up a food MesoMetric does not already have sends only the barcode number.

Nothing about you, your meals, or your training is sent with it.
